The University of Auckland has provided rural health undergraduate training since 2012. It runs a number of innovative programmes, such as the award winning rural health interprofessional programme Te Takapau Wānanga in Hokianga; rural medical immersion programmes in Hāwera, Te Kūiti, Hauraki-Coromandel and Wellsford; the Waikato-Lakes regional rural programme; Pukawakawa in Northland, in which students are four times more likely to work rurally post graduation; and the rural health interprofessional programme in Whakatāne, which has graduated over 700 students from 15 different disciplines and multiple tertiary institutions. Ka Ora Telecare provides people living in rural communities across New Zealand with a quick and easy way to connect with a healthcare professional for after-hours medical advice and treatment. Patients can access same-day phone or video consultations with the medical team, either by calling directly or booking online via the portal. The service operates from 5:00pm to 8:30am on weekdays, and 24 hours a day on weekends and public holidays. The team includes kaiāwhina, registered nurses, general practice doctors and nurse practitioners (available from 5:00pm to 10:00pm on weekdays and from 8:30am on weekends and public holidays), emergency doctors (10:00pm to 8:30am), as well as operations and support staff. Ka Ora Telecare works alongside a patient’s enrolled general practice team to provide seamless after-hours care, assessing needs and offering advice, treatment, prescriptions, test requests, and medical certificates as required. General practices also share up-to-date patient information with the Ka Ora team to ensure care is well-informed and appropriate.
